From 18 to 21 October in Tetova, Prizren and Prishtina
16th EDITION OF THE INTERNATIONAL POETRY FESTIVAL “DITËT E NAIMIT”

From 18 to 21 October there will be in Tetova, Prizren and Prishtina the 16th edition of the International Poetry Festival “Ditët e Naimit”. This cultural and literary milestone is aligned to the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence of Albania in cooperation with the State University of Tetova and with PEN Kosova. Many literary, artistic and cultural activities are planned for this edition. According to the director of the International Poetry Festival “Ditët e Naimit”, Shaip Emërllahu, the participation in this edition has been confirmed by 30 poets from different countries of the world: USA, Argentina, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Senegal, Morocco, Israel, Palestine, India, Lithuania, Ukraine, Algeria, Bulgaria, Turkey, Slovenia, Bosnia and Hercegovina, Kosova, Albania and Macedonia, poets from all Albanian-speaking countries and regions, as well as actors, journalists and poetry-interested people.
The festive opening of the 16th edition will be marked by fireworks in front of the Cultural Centre on October 18th (Thursday) at 7:30 pm.At the beginning, representatives of different literary, educative, political and religious institutions will deposit floral wreaths in front of the statue of the Albanian national poet Naim Frashëri, which stands in the centre of Tetova and was erected by the Direction of the Festival on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his death. After that, the exposition “Pelican” of the painter Miftar Mehmeti, with the title “100 years of Independence”, will be opened in the foyer of the Cultural Centre.
In the Great Auditorium, the 16th Edition of the International Poetry Festival “Ditët e Naimit” will be opened by the Director of the Festival, Shaip Emërllahu. Welcoming speeches for the public will be held by the chairman of the Writers’ Association of Kosova and well-known patriot, Adem Demaçi, and the dean of the State University of Tetova, Prof. Dr. Vullnet Ahmeti.
During the literary hour “Poetic Globe”, the many poets will read their creations in two languages, Albanian and English, accompanied by some musical performances.
During this literary hour, the Director of the Festival, Shaip Emërllahu, will present the laureate from Finland, Tua Forsström, who had been determined before by the Jury of the Festival with the major award “Naim Frashëri and the title of an Honorary Member of the Festival.
Likewise, in this jubilee of the coronation of the endeavours of the Albanians for independence, the Direction of the Festival has declared the polyhedral and emblematic Albanian personality Adem Demaçi as another Honorary Member of the Festival. It is to be noted that the title “Honorary Member of the Festival” has been given up to now by well-known writers and intellectuals like Ismail Kadare, Desmond Egan (Ireland), Thomas Tidholm (Sweden), Manlio Argueta (El Salvador), Abdellatif Laabi (Morocco), Peter Poulsen (Denmark), Lionel Ray (France), Eva Lipska (Poland), Craig Czury (USA) usw.
On the second day of the programme, at 10 am, the laureate Tua Forsström will be presented in the amphitheatre of the State University of Kosova. The chairman of the Jury, Ymer Çiraku, will talk about her creative work, whereas the dean Vullnet Ahmeti will hand her the emblem of the University.
Later, the poets will visit the Teqe Arabati Baba in Tetova, where the spiritual leaders of this teqe will offer a lunch in the honour of the poets.
The second part of the programme will be realized in Kosova, i.e. in Prizren and Prishtina. The literary hour “Poets and verses” will be held in Prizren, whereas the closing evening will take place in the National Theatre in Prishtina, where the poets will be welcomed by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Memli Krasniqi. In Prishtina, the Festival is organized in cooperation with PEN Kosova. After the performance of the poetry recitation, the other literary prizes of the Festival will be awarded: “Ditët e Naimit”, “Menada”, “Oeneum” and “Naim’s Candle”.
The Direction has also published the anthology of the poets participating in this edition, “Sold Dream”, edited by Shaip Emërllahu, and the poetry book of the Algerian poet Nouar Abidi with the title “Tetova, this Beautiful Woman”, which, as he writes in the preface of the book, is dedicated to the “diligent Albanian people of Tetova”.
As always, the opening of the 16th edition of the International Poetry Festival “Ditët e Naimit” will be broadcasted live on the National Television of Macedonia in the Albanian-language programme, whereas the closure of the Festival in Prishtina will be transmitted by Radio-Television of Kosova.
The Festival is supported by the Ministry of Culture of Macedonia and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports of the Republic of Kosova as well as by the sponsors T-Mobile, Emka, Arbi, Euro Proekt, Dino and Hit Oil.
